I have an idea that will help preschool teachers in the Shenango Valley. I am trying to organize a group of retired educators that would like to volunteer in preschool classroom. I am calling the organization The Third Set. We would provide member centers with a volunteer that would act as a third set of hands in a classroom that has a child that needs one-on-one attention.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI think many of us faced different challenges during our advocacy efforts, I am sure you faced one or two during you process. Even with difficulties you have stepped into a very important advocacy effort. I think young children need lots of helping hand and encouraging words for them to get motivated. Without discouraging them , you have stepped into a process that help both sides. Retired teachers get a chance to work with children while children get a chance to learn different things from these lovely teachers.
Paulette,
ReplyDeleteI work for Head Start and in our agency Tri-County Opportunites Council has a foster grant program. We have just received a foster grandparent. She works in our classroom fifteen hours a week. She gets paid something like $2.50 an hour and mileage as well. She is too help with specific children and what else is needed. It has been wonderful for our classroom. The kids love her and she enjoys coming in three times a week. I think you have a great idea. We require a DCFS background check for a foster grandparent to come. What ages or grades will these teacher be with and what are their responsibilities?
Ann, thank you for commenting on my blog. I have not heard of the foster grandparent program. It sounds like something we can use. We have birth to 12 years old. We would need someone with experience in the education field. Each child's needs would be different.
